India is a country of many adventures. There’s always something or the other waiting to be discovered and cherished by you. India has remained a popular destination for a host of different reasons, rightly so, because there is just so much to offer to every kind of traveler. It’s weeks of blissful indulgence in culture, curry, and noisy traffic!

Your purpose of the visit could be anything from business, vacationing, or a medical visit, but one thing remains a common requirement; an Indian visa. Now, the mere thought of hassling for a visa perturbs the traveler, and you look for an easier alternative. An e-Visa is just that and much more.

The Indian government launched the e-Visa online system in 2014 to eliminate unending paperwork and visits to the consulate/embassy that was usually associated with a visa application process. So now you have the option to proceed with your e-visa application process before arriving at the immigration desk. Sounds easy, right? It is, but there are still a few things you must know before you embark on your journey to India! Let’s get right to it.

e-Visa Application Process

From what documents you would need to understand the eligibility, among other things, read on to clear all your doubts.

What Is An e-Visa?

The Indian e-Visa is an electronic version of a traditional visa, a document authorizing your travel to India for whatever reason. The major shift is in the e-Visa application process, which is entirely online. e-Visa has five sub-categories which are as follows:

  • e-Medical Visa
  • e-Medical Attendant Visa
  • e-Business Visa
  • e-Tourist Visa
  • e-Conference Visa

It is applied online and, once made, sent to you via email. The payment is also made online, and you receive the digital copy in advance, which is before your trip actually begins.

If you are a citizen of any of the 161 plus countries listed on the website, then you can proceed with your e-visa application process. The only exception is if you are of Pakistani origin or hold a Pakistani passport where you have to apply for a regular visa at the Indian Mission. You don’t need one if you’re from Nepal or Bhutan.

Additionally, the passport you hold must have remaining validity of at least six months at the time of going ahead with your e-Visa application process. And, as with any visa application process, you must also possess a return or onward journey ticket with proof of money to sustain you throughout the visit.

But you wish to cross-check your eligibility for the Indian e-visa, we suggest you check the thorough details on the official government website.

The documents required for your e-visa application process will be as follows:

  • Applicant’s recent passport size photograph with a white background.
  • It is mandatory to upload a scan of personal details such as your name, date of birth, expiry date, nationality, etc., from your passport.
  • A document pdf will also need to be uploaded by you as per your e-visa category.
  • Any other documents as required by the specific category of e-visa you apply for.

e-Visa Vs. Regular Visa

A regular visa application will mandate your visit to the Indian Consulate or Embassy, as we have mentioned earlier. This means you would have to take time out to schedule this e-visa visit. More time and paperwork are involved in a regular visa, but despite that, it has the benefit of a more extended validity period and entries from multiple points.

The e-visa application process is evidently faster and simpler than a regular visa with the added advantage of having a digital copy, so no more worrying about losing your visa! The confirmation procedure is also convenient as you are informed before your arrival of your e-visa status by email. Planning the trip becomes much more manageable, although the fee is not refunded in case your application is rejected for some reason. The e-visa also allows multiple entries with a stay of maximum 180 days.

Validity Period

The validity of your e-visa depends on the category you have applied for. If you visit India for business or leisure, your e-visa is valid for a year from the day it has been electronically approved. Stay limits are different for these two purposes; a business e-visa allows a stay of 180 days and a tourist one for 90 days. Multiple entries are allowed for both.

Certain nationalities are exceptions and can stay in India for a period of 180 days with an e-Tourist visa. e-Medical visas last for 60 days from the day of your arrival. Three entries are allowed on such visas.

Processing Time

The processing time depends on your opted choice from the three options available:

  • Standard Processing: 5 days for $86.00 (including service fees)
  • Rush Processing: Processing done in 3 days for $116.00 (including service fees)
  • Super Rush Processing: Your e-visa application process is completed within 2 days for $151.00 (including service fees)

Not that you have the basics clear, it’s time for you to start gathering all the required documents and begin your e-visa application process. India awaits you with an open heart!
